NerdLab

Credits & Art Licenses

Last updated: August 19, 2026

NerdLab ships artwork made by other people, most of it given away for free by artists who asked for very little in return. This page is that little: every bundled art source, who made it, and the licence it arrived under. Where a licence requires attribution, the individual artists are named here rather than lumped together under a project name.

1. game-icons.net

NerdLab bundles the complete game-icons.net icon set — 4,134 icons — used for creature silhouettes, map tokens and interface art. A further twelve icons are embedded directly in the map editor's code and are listed separately below.

Licence: Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported (CC BY 3.0) · 123 icons by two artists are CC0, marked below

Icons made by the following artists. The number beside each name is how many of their icons are bundled.

Icons are used as supplied except for colour: they are rendered in the interface's current text colour rather than the original white-on-black, and scaled to fit. No other modification is made. Nine icon names exist in two artists' folders upstream; both possible artists are credited above, so those individual totals may be off by one either way.

Embedded in the map editor

These twelve icons are compiled into the application rather than loaded from the bundle. Same licence, same attribution requirement.

2. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup

The pixel-art creature tiles in the map editor's asset library come from Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, an open-source roguelike whose artists have released the overwhelming majority of the game's artwork into the public domain.

Source: github.com/crawl/crawl · Licence information: github.com/crawl/tiles
Licence: CC0 1.0 Universal (public domain dedication) · Attribution not required; offered here anyway

Crawl's own licence states that its tiles are released under CC0 and that new submissions are CC0 by default, while noting that older pieces can be less clear-cut. The crawl/tiles project publishes both the list of artists who released their work (ARTISTS.md) and the list of tiles whose ownership could not be established (TILES_UNDER_UNKNOWN_LICENSE.md).

NerdLab ships only tiles that could be confirmed against one of those primary sources. Tiles on the unknown-licence list, and tiles whose artwork predates Crawl's CC0 policy and is credited to someone who never released their work, were removed rather than shipped. Thanks are owed to the Crawl developers and tile artists, and to the maintainers of crawl/tiles for doing the relicensing work in the first place.

3. Kenney

The map editor's tile packs — floors, walls, dungeon and town scenery, and character sprites — are by Kenney, who has released an enormous library of game art into the public domain. Credit is not required for Kenney's work. It is given here because a library that size, given away for free, deserves saying so.
